It's no coincidence that one day after the White House announced new emissions targets, China followed suit with its own target. The Daily Beast's Richard Wolffe on the behind-the-scenes negotiations during Obama's Asia trip that could help break the climate stalemate in Copenhagen.

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Environment, China, Richard Land, Climate Change, Barack Obama

Obama and (climate) change: Indian edition

The U.S. launched this week a historic program to advance clean energy in India --where simply moving the 40 percent of the South Asian nation's citizens who still burn coal, dung or wood to electricity could deliver major improvements for development, clean air and climate. Last week, it was a similar historic program to advance clean energy with China as well as a shared commitment to meaningful steps as part of the upcoming Copenhagen climate talks. And, to top it off, Obama has announced plans to swing by the talks on Dec. 9 as well as to publicly commit to U.S. emission reductions "in the range of 17 percent below 2005 levels in 2020 and ultimately in line with final U.S. energy and climate legislation." [More]

Jessy Tolkan: Attn Leaders: Share Your Ideas With Obama at Wednesday's Youth Clean Energy Forum

This Thanksgiving, leaders in the youth climate movement have much more to celebrate than our tofurkey dinners. On the heels of the President's encouraging announcement that he will attend the United Nations climate summit in Copenhagen on Dec. 9, dozens of us also received an invitation to the Obama Administration's first-ever Youth Clean Energy Forum.

The event will be hosted at the White House on Wednesday from 4 - 7pm EST, and will also be webcast to young people across the country at: www.whitehouse.gov/live .

The membership of the Energy Action Coalition's partner organizations are honored that President Obama and his team have heard our actions loud and clear this year in the creation of this forum. We're excited to embrace this opportunity as a dialogue that can yield substantial, bold results in a timely manner.

The forum will take place in less than one week, and we want to make sure that you have a chance to contribute to the conversation. If you'd like us to ask a question ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Green Living, Barack Obama, Clean Calgary Association

(Okay, okay: Technically, the White House calls it the “Green Partnership to Address Energy Security, Climate Change, and Food Security.”). Does it mean anything? Maybe. Essentially, it provides for some technical assistance to improve governance capacity and scientific knowledge, and some new initiatives to foster R & D. It also takes the sensible position that the developed countries will adopt emissions reductions targets while the developing countries will adopt “nationally appropriate mitigation measures.” The White House press release states in boldface that both President Obama and Prime Minister Singh “ resolved to take significant mitigation actions and to stand by these commitments ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Environment, India, Climate Change, Barack Obama

Today is Part 4 of my "What's up with Copenhagen?" series and it was going to provide some conjecture about whether or not Obama would go to the climate talks. But Obama beat me to the punch.

This morning his administration announced that Obama would indeed be attending the UN climate talks on Wednesday, Dec.

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Green Living, Barack Obama

Obama headed to Copenhagen, sets the bar for success

by Bill Scher President Obama announced today that he will attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen , raising the stakes for himself and all participating nations. The initial goal for Copenhagen was to forge a binding treaty. But that ambitious goal has been scaled back. With American climate protection legislation bogged down in the Senate after clearing the House, Obama can’t put enough commitments on the table to secure a final agreement. Division over how to financially help developing nations respond to global warming also remains far from resolved. But the participating nations do not want Copenhagen to be an exercise in vague rhetoric and meaningless communiques. What would constitute a success? What could come out of Copenhagen that would help us avert a climate crisis? President Obama laid down that marker yesterday , in his joint appearance with the Indian Prime Minister: ...it’s ... essential that all countries do what is necessary ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Environment, Barack Obama

Obama going to Copenhagen

by Agence France-Presse President Barack Obama will attend the climate summit in Copenhagen next month and offer to cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent from 2005 levels by 2020, officials said Wednesday. Obama hopes to “give momentum to the negotiations” on Dec. 9 when he attends part of the 12-day global summit aimed at finding a successor to the Kyoto Protocol on climate change that expires in 2012, a senior official said. The president will commit to the near-term U.S. emissions reduction target of 17 percent as long as China and other emerging nations made serious pledges of their own, a White House statement said. “In light of the president’s goal to reduce emissions 83 percent by 2050, the expected pathway set forth in this pending legislation would entail a 30 percent reduction below 2005 levels in 2025 and a 42 percent reduction below 2005 in 2030,” it said. The initial goal for Copenhagen was to forge a binding treaty. But that ambitious goal has been scaled back. With American climate protection legislation bogged down in the Senate after clearing the House, Obama can't put enough commitments on the table to secure a final agreement. Division over how to financially help developing nations respond to global warming also remains far from resolved.

But the participating nations do not want Copenhagen to be an exercise in vague rhetoric and meaningless communiques. What would constitute a success? What could come out of Copenhagen that would help us avert a climate crisis?

President Obama laid down that marker yesterday , in his joint appearance with the Indian Prime Minister:

...it's ... essential that all countries do what is necessary to reach a strong ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Other, Barack Obama

Climategate Hoax: GOP Opens Probe Into Climate-Change E-Mails

WASHINGTON — Congressional Republicans are investigating e-mails stolen from a British climate change research center that they say show scientists attempting to suppress data that does not support man-made global warming.

Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe, a global warming skeptic, sent letters Tuesday to the inspectors general of several agencies and to scientists asking them to retain records related to the e-mails.
House Republicans want to know how much the scientists contributed to a widely cited U.N. report on climate change. The report has served as the basis for action in Congress and by the Obama administration to reduce greenhouse gases.

One of those scientists, Kevin Trenberth, said the e-mails do not show scientists colluding but arguing vigorously about the science.

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Environment, Climate Change, Washington, Oklahoma, James Inhofe, Barack Obama

Alex Wang: Obama In China: What Should Be Done To Build Confidence On US-China Climate Action

The leaders of the world asked for an extension on climate action in Singapore this past weekend. As Jake Schmidt points out , whether this is good or bad depends on how the leaders of the world's top emitters use this extra time beyond Copenhagen. To wit, will nations use the extra time to break through some of the key sticking points on the way to a serious agreement, or is this just more delay?
This means that President Obama has some work to do in China this week. Climate change has already been placed clearly at the top of the agenda for his visit to China, and this is a remarkable development. But important advancements need to be made this week to push forward on building the trust and technical capabilities needed to bring about a meaningful international climate agreement.
One area of clear mutual interest is in the growing of green-tech industries and markets on both sides of the Pacific. The US and China both have a major interest in dealing with the ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Environment, China, Climate Change, Barack Obama

Obama Turkey Pardon: Thanksgiving At The White House

On Wednesday, President Obama will participate in the the annual White House Thanksgiving Turkey pardon, a tradition where presidents "pardon" a turkey from slaughter in a White House ceremony. The turkey is typically shipped off the Disneyland to live out the rest of its days.

The year, The president of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk has written in a blog for HuffPost:

On behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and our more than 2 million members and supporters, I am writing to ask three things: 1) that you please send this year's pardoned turkeys to a credible sanctuary; 2) that in your speech at the pardoning ceremony, you acknowledge the millions of compassionate Americans who personally pardon turkeys every year by choosing a vegetarian Thanksgiving meal; and 3) that you invite PETA's chef to present a delicious cruelty-free Thanksgiving meal for you and your family, including Tofurky with all the trimmings, from corn bread to cranberries, and an all-American vegan apple pie ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Other, Turkey, PETA, Barack Obama

Frances Beinecke: Obama's Meeting with India's Prime Minister: Another Chance to Advance Clean Energy

With the international climate negotiations in Copenhagen just weeks away, Obama has chance to push real, concrete action forward by making clean energy and climate solutions a central part of his meetings with India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
As the world’s fourth largest emitter of greenhouse gases, India will be a critical player in Copenhagen. Its economy is rapidly expanding, and its emissions could skyrocket with the projected growth of its middle class from 50 million to 500 million in the next few decades.
Prime Minister Singh understands that climate change is already having an impact on his people, and his government has taken several steps to address it , including releasing its National Action Plan on Climate Change in 2008. On Friday, I learned from a call with IPCC Chairman R.K. Pachauri that the Indian Cabinet just approved a bold plan for generating 20,000 megawatts from solar energy by 2022.
I also heard about many of India’s clean energy ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Environment, India, Barack Obama, Clean Calgary Association, Frances Beinecke

The vegan meal would provide some balance to all the free publicity given to the turkey industry on this occasion.

As you may well know, Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be America's national bird. Franklin noted how courageous turkeys are, and today's animal behaviorists say that turkeys are indeed ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Other, Barack Obama, PETA

by Jonathan Hiskes Todd SternAs Dave lamented last week, most of the predicting and posturing preceding the Copenhagen climate talks amounts to little more than Some Person Guessing. You might consider the weekend news from the UK Observer—which reported the Obama administration’s intention to set a provisional target for U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions—to be more of the same, though it at least relies on the head of Obama’s climate negotiation team. From the Observer : President Barack Obama is considering setting a provisional target for cutting America’s huge greenhouse gas emissions, removing the greatest single obstacle to a landmark global agreement to fight climate change. The Observer has learnt that administration officials have been consulting international negotiators and key players on Capitol Hill about signing up to a provisional target at the UN global warming summit in Copenhagen, now less than three weeks away.
John Passacantando: Obama Punts on Copenhagen and Eisenhower Calls off Invasion at Normandy

Bill McKibben pulls it all together today in his Washington Post essay explaining what's at stake if President Obama sticks to his decision to let the coming climate meeting in Cophenhagen fail.

Try to re-imagine World War II in this context. Just before the invasion of Normandy, General Eisenhower decides not to send the Allied forces into Normandy. It's too windy, too choppy, the risk of failure too great. Instead he says, "I will work with Allied leaders toward a more modest interim invasion and I assure you that we will have a really big invasion next year." That is exactly where we are on global warming when it comes to US leadership. The fossil fuel industry sets the agenda, the agenda is to delay action, and politicians from both parties dutifully follow.

I remain audaciously hopeful that my president could pull this off if he chooses to. The question is, will he?

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Other, Barack Obama, Washington

No to Obama’s agrichemical industry man, yes to Bed-Stuy Farm

by Tom Philpott This post marks the launch of “Plate Tectonics,” a new feature that highlights ways that citizen action can move the food system in more sustainable directions. ————————- How do we stop this thing?Like many people, I applauded when Michelle Obama broke ground on her organic garden—and jeered when Croplife America, the pesticide industry’s main lobby group, chided her to spray “crop protection” (i.e., poison) on her family’s veggies. I was proud of the First Lady for shrugging off that absurd appeal. That’s one reason I came down with whiplash when Michelle’s husband nominated a top Croplife America functionary to the post of chief agricultural negotiator at the U.S. Trade Office. Instead of handing the guy a powerful post, shouldn’t the Preseident have punched him in the jaw for the insult to the family spinach? Normally, the appointee—Isi ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Environment, Barack Obama

Robyn O'Brien: Eight Steps Obama Could Take to Save Food

The landscape of health has changed. No longer are our families guaranteed a healthy livelihood, not in the face of the current rates of cancer, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer's and allergies. In the words of Elizabeth Warren, Harvard University law professor who is head of the Congressional Oversight Panel, "We need a new model," and we need a new food system. It's our health on the line.

Here are eight steps President Obama could take to save food:

  1. Evenly distribute government moneys to all farmers: The current system allocates the lion's share of our tax dollars ( approximately $60 billion ) to farmers growing crops whose seeds have been engineered to produce their own insecticides and tolerate increasing doses of weed killing herbicides. As a result, these crops, with a large chemical footprint, are cheaper to produce, while farmers growing organic produce are charged fees to prove that their crops are safe and then charged additional fees to label these crops as free of synthetic ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Environment, Barack Obama

Hot planet to Obama: What’s your Plan B?

by Mike Tidwell “Never again.” Those ought to be the words coming from the White House right now on global warming. Never again can we tolerate a year like 2009, where attempts to cap carbon pollution experience such profound stagnation. Already this month President Obama has confirmed two painful truths. First: Congress will not complete work on a global warming bill in 2009. And second, the corollary blow: There will be no international climate deal in Denmark next month, dashing years of international hopes. So now Obama’s message ought to be “never again.” The planet just can’t endure another year of inaction. Obama should travel to the Copenhagen climate conference in December and guarantee dramatic action from the U.S. in 2010 even if it means blowing everything up in Congress and starting over. If a “cap and trade” bill won’t fly in the Senate in 2010, then let the Environmental Protection Agency explore maximum-strength carbon ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Environment, Barack Obama

Copenhagen panic is premature

by Geoffrey Lean As resurrections go, it was a speedy one. On Monday, much of the world’s media declared that the chances of a worthwhile deal being reached at next month’s international climate talks were as dead as the proverbial dodo. By Tuesday, however, the conjectured corpse was clearly still alive, if not exactly kicking. President Barack Obama and President Hu Jintao were quick to insist this week that their two nations are committed to making Copenhagen a success. Above, the two leaders together at a reception before the formal state dinner at Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China on Nov. 17, 2009.White House PhotoThe cause of the premature obituaries were weekend statements by President Barack Obama and Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen that it would not be possible to finalize a full, legally binding treaty when diplomats from around the world gather in Copenhagen starting December 7. This, we were told, would turn the meeting into little ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Environment, Barack Obama

Obama and Hu Jintao Talk Climate Change: "We Must Rally The World" For Climate Deal In Copenhagen

BEIJING — President Barack Obama, with China's leader at his side, lifted his sights Tuesday for a broad interim accord at next month's climate conference that he said will lead to immediate action and "rally the world" toward a solution on global warming.

Obama and President Hu Jintao talked of a joint desire to tackle climate change, but failed to move off differing positions on an root issue that could block a deal at the 192-nation conference in Copenhagen: how much each country can contribute to curb greenhouse gases and how the world will pay the billions of dollars needed to fight rising temperatures.
Hu said nations would do their part "consistent with our respective capabilities," a reference to the firmly held view among developing nations – even energy guzzlers like China, India and Brazil – that they should be required only to set goals for reining in greenhouse-gas emissions, not accept absolute targets for reducing emissions like the industrialized ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Environment, Climate Change, Barack Obama, Hu Jintao

When the presidents of two nations responsible together for 40 percent of Earth's climate-changing greenhouse gases sit down to talk, big things can happen. In the case of Barack Obama and Hu Jintao on Monday and Tuesday, that meant flatly stating that emission reduction targets should be set at an international negotiation on climate change in Copenhagen this December, along with financial assistance figures to help poorer countries mitigate emissions and adapt to a changing climate. Oh, and the world should cut back on deforestation. [More]

Is Bill McKibben right to be angry with Obama?

by David Roberts In his latest column, Bill McKibben lays a wide range of sins at the feet of Barack Obama, accusing him of “fibbing and spinning” on climate change. He says Obama is “not particularly focused” on climate (while linking to coverage of an Obama speech dedicated to climate). He says that by putting health care ahead of climate change, Obama “guarantee[d] that health care would occupy most of the year.” He says that by focusing on green jobs and energy security rather than climate change, Obama has “left the door open for climate deniers to have a field day.” Obama’s administration is “spinning” by focusing on the still-common 450 ppm number for atmospheric CO2 rather than the 350 ppm favored by some activists and scientists. I could not be more sincere when I say that I wish Obama were responsible for health care reform dragging on, for climate deniers and delayers, for the lack of ambition U.S. negotiators can ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Environment, Barack Obama

Jessy Tolkan: Young Americans Won't Let Obama Waste Copenhagen Opportunity

I was wide awake until 3am last night watching President Obama take questions from students in Shanghai, China, after announcing over the weekend that the expectations for the United Nation's climate meeting in Copenhagen next month will be significantly scaled back .

Seeing a president who wants to be a part of the solution to the negative effects of harmful pollution and dirty energy address a crowd of young people should have been rewarding. Instead, I couldn't help but feel disappointed that he has yet to engage with the young Americans in the youth climate movement in the same way. Especially since we're here, rallying around these essential issues using the grassroots organizing skills he championed during the election, trying to underscore the "fierce urgency of now" he encouraged us to believe in.

Maybe if the president had engaged with us more deeply, he would understand that young people know we can't put politics before progress on climate and energy.

Sadly, President Obama ...

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Other, Barack Obama

Obama Hobbled By Congress In Fight Against Global Warming

President Obama came into office pledging to end eight years of American inaction on climate change under President George W. Bush, and all year he has promised that the United States would lead the way toward a global agreement in Copenhagen next month to address the warming planet.

But this weekend in Singapore, Mr. Obama was forced to acknowledge that a comprehensive climate deal was beyond reach this year. Instead, he and other world leaders agreed that they would work toward a more modest interim agreement with a promise to renew work toward a binding treaty next year.

Find more top green news, videos, and blogs on EarthBlips: Environment, Global Warming, Barack Obama, George Will, United States, Singapore
