The New High Line
Where — ... is an elevated park that runs along the west side of Manhattan. It is built on a former railway that was used from 1934 until 1980. It was then taken over by vegetation, becoming a sort of informal and not so easily accessible greenway above the streets. In 1999, local residents Joshua David and Robert Hammond founded Friends of the High Line to save it from demolition and build support for converting it into a public park. The city approved funding in 2004, and the lower section (from Gansevoort to 20th Street) opened in June. ...
